The publication of a new World Almanac and Book of Facts is like Christmas for trivia buffs, and the 2020 edition is indeed cause for celebration. The standard fare that has made the book a ready-reference must since 1868 (like economic and health statistics, scientific discoveries, worldwide demographic information, and sports stuff) is all there, and the 2019 year in review covers a chronology of major news stories, Supreme Court decisions, and major deaths. This edition includes a "Decade in Review," with a very brief synopsis of major world and U.S. news and happenings in the realms of business, science and technology, pop culture and media, and sports for each year since 2010. There is also a preview of the 2020 presidential election, with primary and caucus dates being the most useful data. The World Almanac and Book of Facts continues to earn its rightful spot behind every reference desk in every library.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2020, American Library Association.)

While smartphones make it possible to look up arcane facts when a specific need arises, this almanac supplies information you might not realize you want to know. Whether tastes run toward Canadian prime ministers, the original names of selected entertainers, crude oil imports by country, or country statistics and profiles, there is a fact for every interest. Color insets include flags, maps, and notable events in arts, science, and sports. VERDICT Equally useful for completing school assignments, settling bets, and discovering trivia.--Maggie Knapp, Trinity Valley Sch., Fort Worth, TX
