This is a chronicle of one man's supposed real-life encounter with the supernatural. Jansen lived on Long Island, NY, with his wife and young son. The house had always seemed creepy to him, full of unexplained noises, but Jansen, a devout Catholic, dismissed the existence of the paranormal. He relates his quest to find a solution when the number of incidents in the house escalated and the whole family was on edge. Jansen turned first to his religion, but his readings told him that the Catholic Church does not believe in the paranormal and that anything otherworldly is best avoided. As things worsened, Jansen turned to Mary Ann Winkowski, the so-called Ghost Whisperer, who offered solid advice on how to deal with the problem. VERDICT The book is an eerie, well-told ghost story, but the overall religious tone makes for an odd mix. Hard-core ghost readers will find this interesting.--Susan Flaherty, Portland P.L., ME
