Travel-lovers know that all travel is a mind-broadening experience, whether backpacking or on le grand tour. Houghton, former CEO of Lonely Planet, might remind readers of their own memories when he recounts his travel stories alongside tales of rebuilding Lonely Planet after its re-purchase from BBC. Eighteen conversational interviews, from people like Richard Branson of Virgin, Phil Rosenthal, host of Somebody Feed Phil; global hotelier James McBride; and Doug Mills, a photojournalist covering the White House for 25 years, reveal subjects' travel adventures both incredible and not-so-wonderful. Writing in a breezy style with personal anecdotes that will touch hearts and minds, Houghton has produced not so much a travelogue but a memorable way of looking at trips, tours, and experiences at home and overseas. The final chapter delivers a 19-item checklist, such as get to the airport early and bring $200 in local currency, that some readers might not be in total agreement with, but all will appreciate his practical mindset and his journeying vision.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
