Braswell, CEO and cofounder of Jopwell, a career-advancement platform, brings his experience and expertise as an African American in corporate America to this invaluable guide to surviving the work world for people of color (POC). He starts by arming readers with data to back up the notion that a diverse workforce is good for business, resulting in increased profits and better employee retention. He advises employees to bring that data to the table, arguing alarmingly but not incorrectly that the right thing to do argument will inspire only a token effort at diversity. The majority of the book is a guide for POC to survive and thrive in corporate America: dealing with implicit bias; the positive and negative effects of being in the spotlight; authenticity and personal branding; and ways to lead, no matter your position on the organizational chart. Throughout, Braswell is realistic about barriers and the amount of patience required to succeed. This frank, inspiring book belongs in every library that supports job seekers, and leaders at all levels and of all ethnicities will learn from it.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
