Writer, executive coach, and host of the podcast Punk Rock HR, Ruettimann here shares career advice, with many personal detours: stories about her work as an HR leader at Pfizer, the bariatric surgery she underwent in Tijuana, and the executive coaching she does now. Her book's focus, though, is on finding the self: the authentic individual who somehow got lost in the often-toxic environment called work. In the process, Ruettimann shoots down a lot of long-held myths, such as the need for a career identity statement (opting instead for a human statement) and negative perceptions around becoming a ""slacker."" In fact, she advocates for adopting practices like leaving early, establishing boundaries, and spending time with friends and family. Throughout her counsel, practicality reigns. Fix you before changing. Ensure that learning is lifelong. Quit with a defined goal (the trick is asking for severance in the right way at the right time). Irreverent, funny, direct. As a former HR professional, Ruettimann offers transparency about jobs in America that readers will find very appealing.
