Observing the world around you and then capturing it within the pages of a sketchbook is the artistic aim of urban sketching. In this introductory guide artist, teacher, and international correspondent for the nonprofit group Urban Sketchers Shirodkar (Sign of the Times: The Vintage Signs of San Jos' Captured in Urban Sketches) provides fledgling artists (as well as more experienced sketchers in need of a brush up) with the basics for drawing people, places, and things on location. The instructions are concise and helpful and include a survey of the necessary tools, as well as an assortment of "Start Here" exercises that breakdown a concept like seeing contours into a series of achievable steps. Examples from artists around the globe are scattered throughout the book giving additional insights and practical tips. VERDICT Those new to urban sketching will be cheered by the sunny tone and practical advice dispensed by this guide, which comes in a compact, easy-to-carry format with an elastic band closure.--John Charles, formerly with Scottsdale P.L., AZ
