What can happen at a women's writing retreat? A lot, including gossiping, bass fishing, wrestling matches, couples falling in love, and cathartic moments of self-knowledge. Sculptor Barb Davis has brought together 13 lesbian authors to write essays on transitions in their lives. Some are planners, some write instinctively; others are less concerned with communication than with creating chaos. Technically a sequel to McMan's novella Bottle Rocket, in that it revisits many of the same characters, this title stands on its own as a novel. There isn't a lot of dramatic conflict or tension, but the characters are appealing, and McMan pokes gentle fun at some of the tropes and cliches of the lesbian art community. As a counterpoint, one writer, Quinn, becomes obsessed with entering a bass fishing tournament while at the retreat, despite having no boat, no equipment, and no fishing experience. But her perseverance reflects the strength and commitment of all of the writers and artists trying to create something meaningful. VERDICT For readers looking for a humorous take on writing and love.--Devon Thomas, Chelsea, MI
