Twice-divorced beauty columnist Amalia Truitt is the target of anonymous death threats and in need of protection as she travels by train to her family's Delaware estate. While many view her career as frivolous, her earnings are used to fund a charity she's quietly set up to help other women escape dangerous marriages. For the journey, Amalia's family has unwittingly tasked her childhood sweetheart and now Pinkerton detective David Zisskind to provide security. David hopes the assignment will lead to a promotion, even if it puts him back in close proximity with the woman who once broke his heart. Danger, excitement, and swoons abound in this delightfully delicious addition to Grossman's "Truitts" series. VERDICT Much like the author's debut novel, Appetites and Vices, this romance does not shy away from the prejudices and hurdles Amalia, a Jewish American citizen, and David, a Russian Jewish immigrant, face in 1870s America, making this an important addition to the historical romance canon. Fans of Joanna Shupe's Gilded Age "Four Hundred" series will fall in love with the flawed Amalia, who bravely takes charge of her own life. Highly recommended.--Elizabeth Gabriel, Milwaukee P.L.
