Detective Aubrey Grayson is enjoying rare vacation days when someone shoots her companion, a senator whom she loves like a father. She goes after the shooter, only to get kidnapped. While she works to escape, her childhood best friend, now FBI agent Jack Shannon, joins the case. Aubrey escapes, and she and Jack soon find themselves piecing together clues about why someone would be after her. All the signs lead to a network of spies. The biggest shock is that her biological father, mostly absent from her life, is right in the middle of this treasonous conspiracy. Jack always regretted losing touch with Aubrey, and now realized that she is the only woman for him, and readers will also admire this smart, strong, and multilayered character. Harris (Deadly Intentions, 2019), writing in the thriller style of J.T. She sets off in search of the suspect but is abducted herself. She narrowly escapes thanks to the help of a childhood friend who's now an FBI agent, Jack Shannon. Jack has always harbored romantic feelings for Bree, but when she started dating his brother, Adam, Jack knew he had to walk away. Adam and Bree eventually broke up, and now that Jack is back in town and there is a terrorist on the loose, he feels compelled to protect her at all costs. Jack and Bree lean on their faith as they work together to take down a man on the run who has connections to Bree's complicated past.VERDICT Harris's (Deadly Intentions) story reads like a low-budget action film with over-the-top exploits and suspects that include international terrorists. Unfortunately, the romance between Jack and Bree isn't enough to keep readers hanging on.--Kara Kohn, Plainfield P.L, IL
