In addition to their vivid Arizona venues, the Lena Jones mysteries are notable for taking up broader societal issues that contribute to the crimes described therein. Here, in the tenth and last installment of the series featuring the indomitable private eye, the focus is on Arizona's apocalyptic cults. Lena and her partner in Desert Investigations, Jimmy Sisiwan of the Pima tribe, are building a home together when Harold Slow Horse turns up with concerns about his addict ex-wife's stay at a purported rehab center called Kanati. Concerned that Kanati is a cult, Lena looks into the organization and finds it claims to offer spiritual enlightenment as well as gourmet food. But then the emaciated bodies of two women and a man turn up in the desert nearby as Lena is trying to locate a missing artist for a gallery owner and find her runaway 15-year-old goddaughter. Identifying the bodies and their causes of death eventually leads Lena back to her personal history and her nightmares of being shot and abandoned by her mother as a young child. This works as a standalone, as well as being the satisfying conclusion to an underrated series.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
