Morgan follows My Lady Mage with a mediocre bridge book. Five damned warriors, brought back to life by their goddess to save the city of Agathia in the few months before the solstice, collect new allies and vague prophetic support for the fight against evil Duke Keirthan’s destructive blood magic. Scholar-warrior Duncan travels to an abbey rumored to have forbidden books that could help counter the duke’s spells. He falls for the appealingly competent Abbess Lavinia, a powerful mage, while coming to terms with using magic himself. Though readers will enjoy passages about the warriors’ tenderness toward their animal avatars and the strong, equal partnerships between the warriors and their lovers, those elements still feel like a sidebar in what is more a fantasy series than a romantic one, and the world-saving plot makes glacial progress toward an inevitable big battle.
