DEBUT Career mom Alexis Gold runs her own advertising agency. She was always more comfortable dealing with deadlines than changing dirty diapers or making school lunches. Her wonderful partner Tommy Whistler--a boy with which she grew up--has happily done the heavy lifting in raising their daughter CeCe. Thirteen-year-old CeCe would prefer a traditional family and wishes her parents would just get a divorce so she wouldn't have to live with her mother, who seems to care more about her clients and employees than her family. When Tommy is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and decides to forgo treatment, neither Alexis nor CeCe knows how they will live without him. How can they survive with only each other? Hammer shines in a debut that takes readers on a journey through one family's heartbreaking summer, told in the alternating points of view of mother Lexi and daughter Cece. Lexi and Tommy met as kids, when Lexi spent summers in the small beach town of Destin, Florida. Years later, Tommy has one failed marriage under his belt and Lexi is chasing her dreams of owning her own advertising agency, but they take their attraction to the next level. When Lexi finds out she is pregnant, Tommy leaves Destin and his private practice and moves to Atlanta to be with Lexi and raise their daughter. While Lexi makes her career dreams a reality through sacrifices and long nights, Tommy and Cece build a strong bond. Then Tommy tells Lexi that he no longer wants to fight his cancer. His wish is to spend his last summer back in Destin and fulfill his bucket list with loved ones by his side.
