MacGregor delivers a passionate, tumultuous sixth Cavensham Heiresses Regency romance (after Rogue Most Wanted). Lady Avalon Warwyk, a Cavensham by birth, is married to a brutish husband who humiliates her by running off with a prostitute, leaving Avalon alone to raise their infant son, Thane. A decade later, Avalon, now a widow, uses her fortune to help women who want to get out of the sex trade. The Earl of Larkton, a good friend of Avalon’s late husband, grows suspicious of Avalon’s involvement with women he views as disreputable and sends his younger brother, vicar and reputed rake Devan Farris, to spy on her. Devan witnessed Avalon at her lowest moment years before, and the strength she showed in her misery earned his admiration. Avalon still thinks of Devan as the man who taunted her with the nickname Lady Warlock, but she slowly comes to see his true nature. Though Avalon’s insecurities and indecision occasionally grow tedious, unexpected twists, hot sex, and a sweetheart of a hero will keep readers’ attention. This tantalizing love story is a solid series entry. Agent: Pamela Ahearn, The Ahearn Agency.

After the death of her horrid husband, whom she did not love, Lady Avalon Warwyk establishes herself in the town of Thistledown, raising her son away from city life. When Devan Ferris arrives as the replacement of the local vicar, Avalon is dismayed. The brother to her son's guardian, Devan has been sent to spy on how she is raising Thane. When he discovers Avalon has set up a business to help resettle women who have fallen on hard times, his interest grows, and Avalon begins to wonder if he might be just the help she needs. VERDICT MacGregor's latest in the "Cavensham Heiresses" series (The Bad Luck Bride) will delight those looking to warm their hearts with a tender read. Passionately defiant of her past, Avalon aims to right the wrongs in Regency England, while Devan stands at the ready to help her. Though the sixth book in the series, this is still a great jumping-on point for new readers.--Kellie Tilton, Univ. of Cincinnati Blue Ash

Of all the parishes in England, why on earth did Devan Farris have to show up in hers? Actually, Avalon Cavensham Pearce, Marchioness of Warwyk, knows exactly why Devan is now the new vicar of Thistledown: Devan's brother, Gavin, obviously sent Devan there to spy on Avalon. As the guardian of her son, Thane, and conservator of the Warwyk estate, Gavin is convinced Avalon is frittering away her son's inheritance on dubious social causes. While Devan is perfectly happy to use his legendary rakish skills to charm Avalon into surrendering the evidence his brother wants, the one thing Devan did not factor into his plans is that he might be the one falling in love. With her usual delightful lan, MacGregor (Rogue Most Wanted, 2019) dishes up plenty of witty dialogue, intriguingly complex characters, and an intensely romantic plot fueled by an abundance of delectable sexual chemistry in the latest incandescent addition to her Regency-set Cavensham Heiresses series.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2020, American Library Association.)
