The muddled sixth romance in Dell’s Texas Rodeo series (after Mistletoe in Texas) delivers on earthy western atmosphere, but disappoints with a frustrating central pairing. Gil Sanchez is a recovered addict and former Texas rodeo star, who, after a career-ending injury, now funnels his energy into the family trucking business. When Gil travels to Montana, a chance meeting with healer Carmelita White Fox leads to a single blistering kiss and an exchange of phone numbers. Despite their initial chemistry, Gil and Carma struggle to communicate across the distance, texting each other GIFs instead of confessing their feelings. Then Carma arrives unexpectedly in Gil’s hometown of Earnest, Tex., to research equine therapy facilities in hopes of opening her own. But even reunited, Gil and Carma fail to express their emotions, seemingly happy to discuss their relationship with anyone but each other. When Gil is offered a miraculous final shot at rodeo glory, Carma agrees to help out, and the two must learn to balance their careers, family obligations, and budding romance. Gil’s return to the rodeo provides much-needed momentum, but Carma’s willingness to sacrifice her plans for Gil strikes a sour note. This is a rare misfire from Dell. Gil Sanchez is a washed-up rodeo star who longs for one more chance at glory. When he runs into the sultry Carmelita White Fox, his soul is awoken and he feels ready to live again. Carma comes from a long line of Blackfeet healers, but she does not know how to fix Gil. They both bring their individual traumas to the table and certainly have walls up, but their desire for each other begin to knock down those barriers. Dell delivers a gritty, true-to-life romance that does not shy away from complicated subjects, though the plot drags a bit at times. Her depictions of rodeo life and Blackfeet healing rituals are incredibly detailed. VERDICT With so many characters from previous books (Mistletoe in Texas; Fearless in Texas), it is recommended that readers start at the beginning of the series to avoid any confusion. Fans of gritty cowboy romances will thoroughly enjoy.--Jacqueline Rammer, Lakeview Community Lib., Random Lake, WI
