Pages upon pages of pseudoscientific explanations and stale dialogue clutter up Whisper of Evil, the newest in Kay Hooper's paranormal mystery series (after Touching Evil). Reluctant psychic Nell Gallagher never planned to return home to Silence, especially not to settle the affairs of her father, whom she hated, or to help solve a string of murders that has the local sheriff scratching his head. But before long, she teams up with her old high school flame, Max Tanner, to root out the killer. While the romantic tension between Nell and Max is strong, the book's action is virtually nonexistent. Instead, Hooper fills her story with unwieldy discussions of psychic powers, energy fields and electric brain impulses.

Nell Gallagher's psychic gifts were more curse than asset until she ran away from Silence, Louisiana, and ultimately joined the FBI. Twelve years later, the Bureau sends her back to Silence to solve a string of murders connected only by the victims' relationships with Nell's sister. Always the understated performer, Alyssa Bresnahan thrills with chills as she unfolds the sometimes grizzly details of crimes and their victims' sins. Hooper sprinkles surprises throughout the story, and Bresnahan never gives them away too soon. Her characters speak with authenticity, using a smattering of accents and intonation with a light but realistic touch. Her pace picks up and relaxes with the story line but imperceptibly enough that we barely notice. R.P.L. (c) AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine
