Balogh (Someone to Wed) continues the Westcott family’s recovery from the reversal of fortune first unveiled in Someone to Love. By indulging in his liaison with Viola, Marcel happily delays returning home to his now-grown twins, who are mostly strangers to him, having been raised by relatives. The lovers’ avoidance of responsibility not only bewilders their families but strains their unexpected deepening feelings for one another. Home, they discover, can’t so easily be shut away. Balogh gives the 40-something lovers refreshing complexity, not sugarcoating their character flaws, and these nods to reality will make Viola and Marcel all the more endearing to readers. Narrator Rosalyn Landor wraps the listener up in this historical romance. Fate lands Viola Kingsley and Marcel Lamarr at the same country inn. She is the former Countess of Riverdale, and he the Marquess of Dorchester; the two share a past encounter. Marcel and Viola decide to run away together and escape their families and responsibilities for a time, but both of their families come searching for them. Landor helps listeners keep the many characters straight by giving each one a unique voice--from Viola's elderly mother to her young grandchildren. Both Marcel and Viola have difficult pasts, and Landor brings out the emotional ups and downs of their romance. The rich quality of Landor's narration makes this audiobook a listening pleasure.
