The action-packed fourth romance in Abramson’s Guardian series (after Sanctuary) sacrifices romance for thrills. After reporter Elle Jameson asks her sister, Abby, a CIA agent, for assistance in her investigation of missing military drones, Abby barely gets a chance to start digging before she’s murdered. Realizing her own life is at risk, Elle goes on the run. Enter the Guardians, an elite team of secret agents dedicated to keeping others safe. Their newest member, Nolan, who himself has been hiding out from enemies for years under an assumed identity, is assigned to protect Elle after her location is compromised. Though the villains chasing Elle and Nolan remain mysterious, making the stakes feel hazy, the nonstop action keeps the pages turning. Secret hideaways offer Nolan and Elle moments of respite to get better acquainted, though their budding feelings for each other are overshadowed by the constant danger Abramson puts them in. Romance fans will be disappointed, but readers looking for excitement will find plenty to hold their attention.
