Captain's Rangers

Kevin Orton enlives Kelton's gritty story of life between the Nueces and Rio Grande Rivers, along the Mexican border, in 1875. Lanham Neal is head ranch hand of Griffin Daingerfield and his daughter Zoe's ranch--until Mexican border bandits attack, burning the buildings and killing Griffin. When Captain L.H. McNelly brings his band of Texas Rangers to establish law and order, Lanham lends a hand. Orton delivers descriptions of McNelly's harsh, controversial methods with a suitable tone of tense restraint. Orton convincingly creates the voices of crusty cowboys and young Rangers, using Texan, Hispanic, and Southern accents when appropriate.
