Narrator Rosalyn Landor's warm and stately voice is colored with a lilting Irish accent for this first of the Reverend Mother mysteries, a new series by Cora Harrison, author of the popular Burren and Gaslight historical mysteries. Set in 1923 in Cork, Ireland, in the midst of the Civil War, the story begins on a chilly morning when Reverend Mother Aquinas discovers the body of a finely dressed girl. It's immediately apparent that she's been strangled and drowned. Narrating in a measured tone of which the Reverend Mother would approve, Landor is a fine partner for Harrison as the author explores issues of class, women's rights, and national identity, as well as the sex and greed that drive the engaging mystery forward.
