AudioFile Magazine
When Robert, Cyril, Anthea, and Jane discover that their new carpet is a magic one, they are thrilled-even though some of their wishes don't work out the way they intend; with the carpet comes a phoenix, who comes to their rescue more than once. Anna Bentinck's reading is slow and articulate, and she distinguishes the children's voices and most of the minor characters as well. The voice of the phoenix is exceptionally well done slow, proper, and a little prim; you can almost see her spreading her feathers and regally acknowledging the children as her subjects. Although the abridgment is somewhat uneven and leaves listeners with an unfinished feeling, the adventures would entice any school-age child. W.L.S. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine

Four British children acquire a magic carpet and embark on a series of adventures, most of which don't turn out as planned. Although the style and setting are dated, the writing is witty and displays a genuine, timeless sympathy with childish sensibilities. Ward's reading is something short of fully voiced but is very listenable. Her voice is pleasant; her tone and pacing are good. Don't use this selection to recruit new audiobook fans from the ranks of Saturday morning cartoon devotees. But the child who is ready for rich language, a slow pace, and gentle humor will find it a pleasant diversion. J.N. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
