How does someone with a less-than-stellar background manage the job hunt? This outstanding book addresses many of the challenges facing such applicants. The red flags of the book's title include chronic health conditions, criminal records, learning disorders, family difficulties, and past drug or alcohol abuse. Krannich, a career writer, asserts that honesty, effective communication, and preparation can potentially outweigh any negatives in an applicant's background. He makes his case clearly, using specific examples that will be relevant to anyone struggling to explain past mistakes to an interviewer. There are also extensive listings of career placement resources as well as tips about salary negotiation and suggestions for managing one's online presence. A particularly effective chapter gives sample answers to interview questions covering a variety of specific situations: lack of work experience, poor school performance, lack of focus, and having been fired from a previous job. The hypothetical answers are simple but effective, and can easily be tailored to fit many different job seekers. This book is a must-read for anyone with red flags looking to successfully navigate the job search and interview process.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
