Long before the COVID-19 pandemic and its resultant lockdowns led to many more people working from home, Woldoff and Litchfield began studying a growing trend among people opting to work in a remote location in lieu of an office environment. Professors of sociology and economics respectively, Woldoff and Litchfield here profile a ""digital nomad"" working community in Bali, Indonesia, and some of the adventurous people who traveled to work there. Living in so-called "creative class cities," with a high cost of living and lack of leisure time, left overworked individuals yearning for a bit more freedom. Bali's relatively low cost of living, beautiful landscapes, and what feels like an almost carefree ambiance prove a welcome respite from the stultifying urban office grind. The authors encounter nomads in their first two months of living in Bali (""honeymoon phase""), recently departed and returned (""visa runners""), or long term transplants (""resident nomads""). Each interviewee provides the interesting backstory that brought them there, from lack of creativity at their job to lack of respect. A wonderful mix of business, philosophy, and sociology.
