The Morons referred to in the title of this entertaining travelogue are two towns in northern Mongolia. And this, for New Zealand author Doig and his friend Tama, was enough justification for a 1,500-kilometre bicycle odyssey: there were two towns called Moron, and we were two morons. It had to be done. And done it was, pretty much by the seat of their pantsthey didn't even buy their bikes until they got to Chinaand without a whole lot of planning. This is a very funny book (imagine Bill Bryson hopping on a bike and heading off into nowhere), with plenty of goofy charm and wacky set pieces, but also with plenty of more serious moments, allowing readers to get a sense of this very foreign country, home to Genghis Khan but also to an awesome vodka named for him. Some might find the graphic imagery a bit off-putting (there's a description of a multipartner sexual encounter that might be more at home in an erotic novel), but this is a no-holds-barred kind of book, and, in that context, it's quite a trip.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2013, American Library Association.)
