According to businessman Fogel (My Mind Is Not Always My Friend) people can train their brains to stop responding automatically and instead move on to thoughtful, healthier functioning. Fogel pulls from the disciplines of psychology, neurology, and physiology to demonstrate that everyone has developed organizing principles based on early experiences that dictate their way of relating in the world, and that these "rules" aren't necessarily valid. The author proposes using the practice of mindfulness to "re-parent" oneself as well as to analyze current behaviors. VERDICT An engrossing, exploratory text for those who want to explore mindfulness as a course to modify their way of living.
