Learn to Timber Frame

There is a unique quality to a timber-framed structure, with such materials adding strength and beauty. Experienced builder Beemer is codirector of the Heartwood School for the Homebuilding Crafts and here introduces the basics of timber framing construction. The book starts with an overview defining the difference between timber framing and modern construction methods. The presentation and organization is superb. A summary of materials and tools is given, with emphasis on the layout of the project. Joinery requires special attention being all mortise and tenon and wood pins. A sample design walks readers through all applications and techniques, with great instruction and detailed illustrations. Timber framing is not easy construction, appealing more to the intermediate builder/woodworker or those who delight in the challenge of traditional building methods. VERDICT Beemer's work focuses on the fundamentals, whereas Steve Chappell's A Timber Framer's Workshop offers a greater assortment of technique. Still, an excellent book on the topic.
