Smith, a solid basketballer at Penn State, knew he wasn't NBA material but wasn't ready to abandon the game, not with professional leagues all over the world paying real money to Americans who could help make their teams competitive. After asking around, he reluctantly accepted a spot in Holland for $2,250 per month. Not big money but a place to start. Smith's itinerant career lasted 11 years. He played in Italy, Uruguay, and Japan, among other locales. The basketball recollections will satisfy straight hoops fans, but Smith's incisive observations of different cultures will make Rick Steves green with envy. In Uruguay, the streets are barely paved, and the fans are passionate and unruly. In Japan, all is pristine and the fans polite. There are downsides to second-tier international basketball, and Smith details all of them. Sometimes the pay envelopes don't arrive. In Japan, the accommodations weren't made for men approaching seven feet tall. In 2007, Paul Shirley's Can I Keep My Jersey? covered much of the same ground, but while Shirley is more caustic and funnier about the life of the basketball nomad, Smith's cultural observations are more insightful.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
