Starred review from December 1, 2015
The legacy of Frank Sinatra (1915-98) as a singer and film star has long been assured, but if an ardent admirer needed just one book to put the performer's career into perspective, this would be it. This oversized beauty covers it all: the music, the films, his activism, his family, and friends. While introductions by singer Tony Bennett and casino magnate Steve Wynn add narrative texture, and Pignone (archivist for the Sinatra family) has included enough text to offer a thorough, if concise, overview of his subject's life and career, it's clearly the photographs that steal the show. Many of the images are previously unseen gems from the family archives, and they truly feel new. Pignone has also annotated each image in a way that adds context to the captured moment, and by juxtaposing many photos with quotes from people such as Bing Crosby, Sammy Davis Jr., and Sinatra himself, the author creates a thorough and loving tribute. VERDICT With an almost perfect blend of text and images, this is a book every fan will love. [See Prepub Alert, 4/6/15.]--Peter Thornell, Hingham P.L., MA
