Chapman (history, Univ. of Oxford: England's Leonardo), who teaches the history of science, wants readers to reject any false notions we may have that science and faith are irreconcilable enemies. The angriest denunciations by atheism's advocates, he tells us, hold little water: men and women of faith have continued to embrace and investigate scientific theories and claims. Chapman focuses rather narrowly upon Christianity itself, and he has rehearsed many of these arguments before (e.g., in his Gods in the Sky); nor is his rather naive reasoning likely to attract much praise. Still, his book is a competent reminder that the history of faith and that of science are much more entangled than we tend to remember. VERDICT A pleasant tour through some of the episodes in the dialog between faith and science; excellent for seminaries and individual readers.
