This intense collection of 21 stories is less for ladies with fuzzy pink handcuffs and schoolgirl outfits, and more for those who are seriously into BDSM. King (Under Her Thumb) collects only the hardest and most extreme. In Rachel Kramer Bussel’s “Out of Sight,” Carla lets strangers have their way with her on her absent dom’s say-so. In Alison Tyler’s “Cubed,” a woman goes home with the stranger in the bar who knows she needs a spanking. In Victoria Behn’s “Hell-bent for Leather,” a busy working woman’s husband knows how to relax and control her when she gets home. These are stories for the woman whose submissive streak runs deep (at least in the bedroom), who never gets more excited than when the man in her life knows just how to take charge, and who secretly wishes her boss would seize her by the hair.

With submission being a sort of "kink du jour," readers might think, "been there done that," but this collection aims to run the gamut. No story is told twice, as submission is explored with diverse fetishes, couplings, and ranges of tone. Even the harder kinks--dirty talk, humiliation, breathplay--take place with communication and established consent, something that happens far too rarely in published erotica. One D/s pair explore the niche kink of pony play in Teresa Noelle Roberts's "Bridle Party," while a punishment scene is more than meets the eye in Lisette Ashton's "Green's." The pieces vary from the fun and filthy to glimpses of a heavier, dark desire, like the illicit tryst in Graydancer's "Savoring Little One" or the surprisingly poignant, aptly placed final piece, Lydia Hill's "My Master's Mark." Overall, the breadth of impressive contributions sends a message that sexual submission is not akin to oppression and will win over even the most reluctant of readers. VERDICT Editor King ("What's Not To Like?") has accrued a top selection of submission stories to tantalize anyone craving some darker, well-written smut.
