Film critic and historian Warren has assembled the seminal anthology of sf movies released in the United States from 1950 to 1962. This era is distinct in that terms such as nuclear and atomic became a part of everyday language and played a role in the extensive radiation themes in many of these films. Increased interest in space travel during this time also contributed to the popularity of sf pictures, which remains a unique aspect of cinema history. This two-volume work was initially published in 1982 (Vol. 1) and 1986 (Vol. 2). All entries in this "revision, correction, addition and expansion" of the original edition include new information. The movies are listed alphabetically, not by release year, which is another change from prior versions. This one-man survey is written from the perspective of an sf movie fan, rather than a scholar. Warren's approach allows him to discuss the film as an enthusiast, providing overviews of plot, evaluating movies with related themes, and offering technical details. VERDICT This detailed chronicle from a devoted sf buff is recommended for film studies students and dedicated aficionados of the genre.--Gary Medina, Marymount California Univ. Lib.
