Baggini (cofounder, The Philosophers' Magazine) here contends that contemporary Western society has denounced reason and argues that we ought to recognize its value. Unfortunately, the project immediately goes off the rails. Baggini tells readers that he is regularly invited to debate philosophically interesting and weighty questions regarding the existence, compatibility, and necessity of God, but explains that he has become less inclined to participate in these debates because audiences are not swayed by reasons or arguments, but rather come to the debate merely to cheer on those who share their beliefs. What Baggini fails to see is that he is doing the same thing, writing a book extolling the virtues of reason to an audience predisposed to believe that reason is king. Furthermore, contemporary irrationality is not pervasive, as Baggini suggests, but rather targeted at policies, social positions, or products that benefit some but harm others. Those who benefit are incentivized to encourage others to disregard only reasons that would thwart their goals. Rather than extol the virtues of reason in philosophical debate, Baggini's goal of restoring reason would be better served by addressing social policies that allow for such widespread, targeted deception. VERDICT Not recommended.--William Simkulet, Cleveland State Univ., OH
