When initially faced with their child's diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), parents may wonder where to turn for background information that will enable them to converse knowledgeably with their child's medical and educational team. This increasingly common diagnosis is particularly perplexing as the causes are still under debate and the treatment options are extremely varied. Experts emphasize that what is helpful for one child with ASD might not work for another. Siri and Lyons, both parents of autistic children, have compiled a useful compendium of research reviews from a wide variety of experts. Essay content ranges from highly technical to very lay-oriented, but all provide an interesting overview of current treatment options. Readers will find a selection of both conventional and alternative therapies. The editors plan to update the volume annually to reflect new research in this field. The volume concludes with a lengthy list of contact information for organizations and schools.
