Louis gets the gift that keeps on giving or growing, rather. The story about a boy and his burgeoning birthday present returns in a 25th-anniversary edition featuring revised text and full-color illustrations. Ages 4-up.
Louis's uncle gives him a tadpole from Scotland, and soon Louis finds that his pet, Alphonse, is growing in ways that defy explanation. Kevin Free's simple narration of this story is pleasant, and his boyish voice nicely sketches the growing relationship between Louis and his pet. Free captures the pair's growing dilemma as Alphonse moves from bowl to sink, to tub, to pool, and appears to enjoy Kellogg's solution to the problem, which is guaranteed to delight your children as well.
