Clive Mantle's talent lends the characters of the Deepwoods distinctive vocal interpretations. As the story of Twig (who thinks he's a wood troll) unfolds, the listener is taken on a journey that is familiar, although the twists of fantasy bring new perspective to the tasks of searching for one's identity, overcoming obstacles, and struggling with enemies. Mantle's excellent and droll reading enhances the combination of description, humor, and wonderful characters. Sky Pirates, Rot Suckers, and Gross Mother are only a few of the creatures Twig meets, and young listeners who love descriptions of disgusting events such as compost dunking will thoroughly enjoy Twig's mishaps. Twig is, well, different. And that's certainly going some in the world of the Edge and the Deepwoods, full of wood trolls, goblins, beasts, and pitfalls of innumerable variety. Clive Mantle's genius brings verve and believability to characters and atmosphere alike, rendering the story a rich experience for children, as well as adults, who enjoy dramatic flair along with an intricate plot. In search of his proper place in the world, poor Twig has such rotten luck that even a dedicated listener might get a trifle testy, but the narration is so wonderful that it's worthwhile to hang on every word. Capable of inspiring shivers, tears, and much in-between, Mantle is the hidden heart of the Deepwoods. P.H.M. (c) AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine
