Well written and researched, this excellent book considers women of all social strata in two distinctly different cities between the years 1820 and 1850, comparing and contrasting similarities and differences in their lives. The authors, associates in history at the College of Charleston, find that Northern and Southern women had much in common--with the notable exception of slavery. The period they examine was one of great political and economic change, which increasingly gave women a choice between dependence or autonomy. The wealth of primary source materials consulted--documents, letters, diaries, and contemporary writings--assist in providing insights into the roots of the feminist movement in the United States. Specialized in content, but nonetheless highly recommended.-- Kathleen L. Atwood, Pomfret Sch. Lib., Ct.
