Ring, author of Stolen Bases: Why American Girls Don't Play Baseball (2009), delivers a compelling account of the state of women's baseball in America. The story centers on the fourth Women's Baseball World Cup, which took place in Venezuela in 2010. Ring profiles 11 women on Team USA, allowing them, through a series of interviews, to tell their storieshow they were introduced to baseball and came to love the game, and the struggles they have endured while playing a sport that didn't welcome them. Some of these talented athletes played on college baseball teams, some came up through college softball, but all reveal themselves to be intelligent and passionate about the sport. Japan, Canada, and Australia are among the countries that foster women's baseball, but the U.S., Ring notes, lags far behind in both support and media exposure. This revealing book, which makes an important contribution to sports and women's history, will interest anyone curious about an overlooked segment of amateur athletics. Pair Ring's account with Jean Hastings Ardell's Breaking into Baseball: Women and the National Pastime (2005).(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
