Early on a September morning in 1994, Wiemer had just finished feeding her newborn baby when, she writes, she saw a "bright, shimmering light" with a human visage in her bedroom. Rather than being frightened, Wiemer felt an overwhelming sense of love and peace, and in those moments, she asserts, she met her spirit guide, Wil. Over the next several days and weeks, Wil offered practical spiritual guidance and advice about Wiemer's relationships with her family and friends. Wil even guided Wiemer into leading workshops in which she helps others communicate with spiritual guides. This simplistic book grew out of Wiemer's experience in leading those workshops. As preparation for connecting with their spiritual guides, people should develop a prayer life and a desire to connect. Wiemer also suggests keeping a journal, speaking the truth and being open to receiving information. The whole notion of a spiritual guide functions, in fact, as an excuse for Wiemer to offer a rather tiresome collection of stale spirituality cliches.

Although Wiemar draws on her Jewish background, she writes about God without denominational reference and teaches workshops on connecting with spiritual guides to people of all faiths. By "spiritual guides," she means spiritual beings outside the self who teach about God's unconditional love. Wiemar doesn't make it clear how they differ from angels. Prayer is singled out as an important preparation for making contact with spiritual guides. Wiemar's approach is practical, outlining step-by-step techniques for communication that vary depending on whether seekers prefer visual, auditory, or kinesthetic contact. Although the author doesn't adequately address concerns such as unconscious self-projection or the problems of receiving negative guidance, this is nevertheless a topic in current demand.
