While Henry David Thoreau's Walden (1854) is known as a seminal work for environmentalists, it had never occurred to Primack (biology, Boston Univ.; Essentials of Conservation Biology) that it was also a valuable data set. However, when looking for detailed earlier information related to flora and fauna, Primack was surprised to learn that Thoreau was a meticulous note taker and had in his journal pages upon pages of facts for more than 300 species of plants, over a period of 13 years. With these in hand, Primack compared and contrasted Thoreau's environmental markers with the same indicators from today and makes the unassailable case that climate change has indeed arrived and is evident at Walden Pond. In addition to plants, Primack and his fellow researchers examine avian data along with that of frogs and other creatures, further driving his point that global warming is making an indelible impression on our planet. He also covers ongoing initiatives to lessen these effects and stem the environmental damage happening all around us. An appendix of species rounds out the title. VERDICT Primack's book brings the issue of climate change down to earth in a focused approach without hard science; recommended to students of environmental studies as well as to general readers active in the study of the subject.--Susan E. Brazer, Salisbury Univ. Lib., MA

Using Henry David Thoreau's classic Walden; or, Life in the Woods as his source for environmental data from the mid-19th century, Primack details how climate change has affected Massachusetts's Walden Pond and its environs in just 160 years. (LJ 3/15/14)
