When a series of grisly murders occurs at the Hartman Catholic Group Home, the administration decides it is best to relocate the surviving children to foster homes until the killer can be apprehended. Robin, a fifteen-year-old resident of the home, is taken in by the Granthams, an eccentric family that has two foster children about the same age. Robin soon learns that there is something off-kilter about the Granthams. One of their boys, Jeremy, is cruel and caustic, the father is a little too affectionate toward her, the mother is detached, and the grandparents living with them are odd and elusive. Robin relies on her devout Catholicism to carry her through the ordeal, but as the murders continue, she questions her faith in God. The good foster son, Dennis, takes solace in classic horror films like C.H.U.D. and Dawn of the Dead, and Robin gravitates toward him for protection. Debut author Andreas layers a sense of foreboding with spats of violence to create a sinister and atmospheric story that will appeal to horror fans.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
