According to Nabhan (Forecasting the Catastrophe), earthquake prediction, like flight, weather forecasting, and space travel before it, may be a reality at some point instead of a fantastical notion. He hypothesizes that scientists, using a combination of increased seismicity indicators that coincide with lunar and tidal phases and with time of day, will be able to foresee precisely when and where earthquakes will occur. Relying on examples of both current and past earthquakes, along with an outline of other countries' prediction methods, the author demonstrates that further rigorous research should be conducted. Part scientific analysis, part manifesto, this book at times feels unfocused. Yet despite the unevenness, the scientific portion is compelling and raises intriguing questions that warrant further probing. Readers don't need a foundation in geology to understand the concepts, but those with a solid knowledge of basic science will get more out of the title. Since it questions a foundational tenet of geology, the work may be controversial and should be read with an open mind. VERDICT Readers with an abiding interest in geology or those with a love of new ideas in science will be drawn to this volume.--Laura Hiatt, Fort Collins, CO
