Investigative journalist Eringer's new novel is the coming-of-age story of a middle-aged man. Luke Andersen is a Santa Barbara surfer who makes his living as a hired driver and karaoke host. His plans rarely extend beyond the next killer wave. On Luke's thirty-ninth birthday, a mysterious older man, Charles Gearhart, hires Luke to drive him to Las Vegas. But when the pair reach their destination, Charles decides to continue their journey, and, though Luke grumbles, he complies. As the two men road-trip through Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon, and California, Charles dispenses life lessons on varied topics, such as standing up to bullies, staying true to one's word, and drinking martinis properly. And as the men explore questions of masculinity and responsibility, Luke confronts the reasons he may be stuck in arrested development. Despite some illogical plot points, and a final twist that will not surprise perceptive readers, Eringer's present-tense narration and conversational style keep the reader engaged throughout the novel. Fans of road-trip stories will enjoy the ride and the descriptions of the American West.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
