Flora has had an unusual but not unhappy childhood in which she was allowed to do many things other children weren't. Her father, Nico, who's much younger than his wife, Zinny, is very affectionate with Flora, but Nico and Zinny are so devoted to each other that Flora feels like a third wheel. As an adult, she takes a series of low-paying jobs and even has a love affair, but she breaks it off when it can't match the depth of love her parents share. Eventually, she gets a job with Edwin Claybourne, a retired professor who writes best-selling crime novels. The job is ideal, and Edwin is the perfect boss. Flora's life is full?until dark secrets from her past begin to emerge. She learns that her entire life has been a sham, and, while oddities of her childhood and her parents' relationship begin to make sense, her own life falls apart. Readers will feel a sense of foreboding from the very first page, but the gut punch of an ending will leave them reeling. A poignant, powerful piece of romantic suspense.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
