In the early nineteenth century, newly widowed Maria Graham has made a name for herself as a travel writer but is now impatient to return to her native England from Brazil. War in the region makes this difficult, and her only way out is aboard Captain James Henderson's Bittersweet. Though Henderson is several years Maria's junior, the two develop a natural chemistry on the long voyage, making parting in England difficult. However, the origins of Henderson's cargo threaten to destroy them both. Sheridan, Scottish author of the Mirabelle Bevan mystery series, adds a whisper of Persuasion to this historical romance, which is made humorous by her tongue-in-cheek rendering of Maria's disdain for Jane Austen. Though the story begins with Maria, much of the plotline focuses on Henderson's transformation to a gentleman. The novel offers tidbits about the cacao trade and is punctuated with intrigue, but the romantic plot between Henderson and Maria takes pride of place. This charming tale will appeal to fans of Georgette Heyer and Georgian and Regency romances.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
