Sixteen-year-old Jonathan Kathrein had only one thing on his mind that August day in 1998, surfing. School started the next day, so this was his last full day of freedom. The surfing area he was headed to was within the Red Triangle, an area of northern California coast that is home to the world's largest concentration of great white sharks, and within hours Jonathan would become the next shark-attack statistic. What follows is a well-written, first-person account of the terror and pain of a shark attack and of the importance of fighting back against the shark, against the weakness and fear while swimming back to shore, and against the pain and discomfort of rehabilitation. Even at his young age, Jonathan was able to handle the subsequent media frenzy and made the decision to give only factual interviews and avoid those that were sensationalistic. As the attack receded in time, Jonathan began to realize he could use his story to teach young people how to approach life's challenges and to become a spokesperson for protecting sharks.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2012, American Library Association.)
