Cholbi (philosophy, California State Polytechnic Univ., Pomona) aims through this collection of essays to introduce readers to the major ethical, legal, and political issues surrounding the controversial practices of euthanasia and assisted suicide. Operating from an ethical/philosophical framework rather than a historical one, he familiarizes readers with the salient legal, societal, and professional developments that inform contemporary debates surrounding these end-of-life choices. The volume is organized into 16 chapters that approach euthanasia and assisted suicide from diverse religious, geographic, and ethical perspectives. The more purely ethical/philosophical sections examine specific legal and moral aspects of assisted dying and palliation, with several chapters devoted to either supporting or opposing the right of patients to rely on medically assisted death. Though there is some unevenness in the clarity and cohesion of individual chapters, overall this title is an accessible and cogent introduction to the topic. For a more historically focused narrative, readers might appreciate Demetra Pappas's The Euthanasia/Assisted-Suicide Debate. VERDICT A worthwhile addition for academic collections, especially for health sciences/medical students and upper-level undergraduates.--Stephen Buss, Univ. of the Sciences, Philadelphia
