Psychologist Cozolino argues that there is a direct correlation between how long we live and how we live. Homo sapiens evolved to be a social animal, according to the author, and when its brain is stimulated by challenges and relationships, it continues to grow. Cozolino explains the science behind the development of the brain, citing studies and observations. He stresses the importance of attachment for older people and views the role of the elderly, tellers of the family stories, as vital to family life. Although older people cannot respond as quickly as the young, he says that they are often able to combine experiences with compassion, resulting in wisdom and empathy. Cozolino scatters thoughtful quotes throughout and shares cases taken from his own therapeutic practice. He urges older people to pay attention to food, exercise, and sleep habits. But more important, he cites the need for meaningful relationships with the young, face-to-face contacts with others, a positive attitude, and worthwhile occupations. This reassuring book would be an inspiration to seniors as well as their families and caregivers.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
