The title refers to a book within this book, a strange and marvelous novel written long ago by a heartbroken Leo Gursky, who lost his first and only love, Alma, when she fled Poland for America before WWII. Leo is now an old man in New York City, unaware that his novel has also survived the war and changed lives.
