On the quaint street of Comely Bank in Edinburgh, Samuel Clark manages a bookstore, thriving not on the books he sells but on the ephemera he finds therein. Sam's true interest lies in people and their secrets, and Comely Bank hosts a rich menagerie of remarkable eccentrics whose lives he can observe. Caitlin, who keeps the shop next door, is withdrawn and self-conscious due to a skin disorder. Alastair lives under the bridge and offers unwanted advice to all who pass, but he can't remember who he is. Sinead, a sex addict, takes care of Toby, a morbidly obese adult-child. But unbeknown to them, the denizens of Comely Bank are doomed, and it is with a note of poignancy that the unnamed narrator relates their stories from a drastically changed future. Contemplative without being preachy, Holdstock explores the ills of today's world and asks what might be different if we knew tomorrow might never come or how we might change if we could truly leave the past behind. A first novel well worth checking out.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
