Following Enemy of Rome (2014), this second book in the author's new series about Hannibal, the Carthaginian warrior (and would-be conqueror of Rome) begins optimistically. Hannibal has the troops mustered, he has a daring plan, and he feels as though victory is within his grasp. But what's this? Rather than meet his force with their own, the Roman military leaders seem to be shying away from war. Eventually the inevitable happens, and the bloody Battle of Cannae ensues. Kane takes real historical events and real characters, layering on an engaging fictional story. Populated with well-designed characters and featuring a compelling historical backdrop, the story is sure to be a hit with readers of historical fiction set in the ancient Roman era.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
