Within a short time Penelope Mont gomery has lost both her father and her brother, as well as all claim to her fam ily estate, which has been taken over by a villainous uncle. When she finds that her uncle is beating a wounded Jaco bite, and that the victim is the man she has adored for years, she sets out to rescue him. Since the man she loves, Quentin, not only is a Jacobite (in 1746, a crime punishable by death), but also possesses the clue that will lead to enormous wealth and to the names of contributors to the Jacobite cause, both the government and private villains pursue the two across England. Penelo pe is a charming heroine, and Quentin is a witty, devil-may-care hero. As the first novel in a series, this is a lot of fun and very promising. Marylaine Block, St. Ambrose Coll., Davenport, Ia.
